DeVonta Smith
DeVonta Smith Tops depth chart along with Brown
Fri, May 6, 2022, 1:53 PM
Following the recent NFL Draft, the Eagles' wide receiver depth chart will be topped by newcomer A.J. Brown along with Smith, Zach Berman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Brown, who the Eagles obtained from the Titans on the first night of the draft, is now slated to pair with Smith, who caught 64 of his 104 targets for 916 yards and five TDs in 17 games as a rookie after going 10th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. At 6-foot-1, 226 pounds, Brown adds a physical presence opposite Smith, who's listed at 6-foot, 170 pounds. The duo's fantasy upside hinges largely on how well they click with starting QB Jalen Hurts, but both Brown and Smith should at least see steady volume in 2022, given they clearly head a wideout corps that also rosters Quez Watkins, Zach Pascal, Jalen Reagor and Greg Ward.
Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts Says he healthy at OTAs
Wed, May 4, 2022, 1:37 PM
Hurts (ankle) told reporters Wednesday that he's healthy following offseason surgery, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
Analysis: As expected, Hurts is healthy for the start of OTAs after electing to undergo offseason surgery on his left ankle to address a lingering issue he faced during the stretch run of the 2021 campaign. A healthy Hurts paired with the newly acquired A.J. Brown should be intriguing for both Philadelphia fans and fantasy managers
Jalen Reagor
Jalen Reagor Becomes trade candidate
Tue, May 3, 2022, 8:39 PM
Jalen Reagor slipped further down the depth chart and is a candidate to be traded after the acquisition of A.J. Brown, Zach Berman of the Athletic reports.
Analysis: Eagles GM Howie Roseman stated after the trade that the team still plans to have Reagor on the roster. But the 2020 first-round pick is now fifth at best on the depth chart with Quez Watkins and Zach Pascal having surpassed him. Greg Ward has been more productive in recent years and is also still on the team. Reagor himself seemed frustrated by news of the deal and erased all mentions of the club on his social media soon after. It may be best for all parties if the 23-year-old got a fresh start elsewhere.
Quez Watkins
Quez Watkins Bumped to third on depth chart
Mon, May 2, 2022, 11:05 PM
Watkins is now seated at third on the Eagles' depth chart after the acquisition of A.J. Brown, Zach Berman of the Athletic reports.
Analysis: Watkins' volume almost certainly takes a hit, as he had been slated to be the Eagles' no. 2 receiver after DeVonta Smith prior to the Brown trade. It's possible, however, that with defenses now having two legit no. 1 receivers to focus on, the Southern Miss product will be more open to scoop up targets and rack up yards. The most likely scenario is that the 2020 sixth-round pick will find it hard to surpass last year's 43 catches and 647 yards.
DeVonta Smith
DeVonta Smith Gets big help in receiving corps
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 3:17 AM
The Eagles hope Smith will be helped by the acquisition of A.J. Brown, Tim McManus of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Smith is a smaller receiver at 6-foot, 170 pounds while Brown is much larger at 6-foot-6 and 340 pounds, and coach Nick Sirianni views the duo as complementary to one another. Brown's addition to the receiver room should at the very least draw defensive focus from the 2021 first-round pick as well as create more opportunity for the whole offense by lengthening drives. Quez Watkins, Zach Pascal, Jalen Reagor and Greg Ward will likely now function mostly as afterthoughts in what was a run-first offense in 2021.
Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts Gains new passing target
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 3:53 PM
The Eagles bolstered the pass-catching corps that Hurts (ankle) will be working with this coming season by trading for wideout A.J. Brown, Tim McManus of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The 6-foot-1, 226 pound Brown -- who subsequently agreed to a four-year, $100 million contract with the Eagles -- will provide the team with a talented and experienced wideout to pair with 6-foot, 170-pounder DeVonta Smith, who Philadelphia drafted 10th overall last year. Along with that improved 1-2 WR punch, Hurts also has a quality tight end to throw to in Dallas Goedert, with the likes of Quez Watkins, Zach Pascal and Jalen Reagor also in the mix for passing targets. Hurts, who is bouncing back from an offseason procedure on his ankle, thus has a chance to grow as a passer in his third season as a pro; any improvement on that front would bolster the 2020 second-rounder's fantasy prospects, which last season were driven by his production as a rusher (784 yards, 10 TDs).
A.J. Brown
A.J. Brown Part of blockbuster trade to Philly
Thu, Apr 28, 2022, 9:05 PM
Brown was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for the 18th overall pick and a third-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Philadelphia used one of its first-round picks to move up and select nose tackle Jordan Davis. Then, the team used its other to bolster the skill positions in a big way by securing one of the best young wide receivers in the league in Brown. Now in Philadelphia, Brown stands to lead a promising receiving corps that also features DeVonta Smith, giving quarterback Jalen Hurts a dynamic top two at the position. As part of the deal, Brown will ink a four-year, $100 million extension, with $57 million guaranteed, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Zach Pascal
Zach Pascal Joining Eagles
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 2:38 PM
Pascal is signing a one-year contract with the Eagles, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Pascal caught only 38 passes last season despite playing 872 offensive snaps, but he does have the benefit of familiarity with Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, who was the Colts' offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2020. The 27-year-old wideout now is set to compete with Quez Watkins and Jalen Reagor for roles behind No. 1 receiver DeVonta Smith, though the Eagles still have plenty of time to add another receiver (or two) to that mix.
Boston Scott
Boston Scott Returning to Philly
Fri, Mar 18, 2022, 5:50 PM
The Eagles and Scott agreed to terms on a one-year contract Friday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Philadelphia is getting back a familiar face to its backfield in Scott, who didn't receive a tender from the team as a restricted free agent this offseason. No matter, he's set to reprise his complementary role to starter Miles Sanders, which amounted to 100 touches for 456 yards from scrimmage and seven rushing TDs in 16 games last season.
Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts Undergoing ankle procedure
Wed, Feb 2, 2022, 8:50 AM
Hurts will undergo surgery on his left ankle Wednesday and is expected to fully recover in time for the start of OTAs, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Hurts played through the ankle injury down the stretch of the 2021 campaign, and he was spotted in a walking boot after the Eagles' wild-card round loss to the Buccaneers. Barring any setbacks in his recovery, Hurts' procedure doesn't look as though it'll have a notable affect on his preparation for the 2022 season during the spring and summer. General manager Howie Roseman previously said in mid-January that Hurts has performed well enough in his first full season as a starter to remain atop the depth chart entering 2022, which should give his managers in dynasty leagues some amount of confidence about his outlook.
Gardner Minshew
Gardner Minshew Makes two spot starts in 2021
Mon, Jan 24, 2022, 3:11 PM
Minshew completed 41 of 60 passes for 439 yards, four touchdowns and an interception across four appearances during the 2021 campaign. He also added nine rushing attempts for 21 yards.
Analysis: While he made four appearances, the majority of Minshew's production came in two spot starts. In Week 13, he drew the nod against the Jets while Jalen Hurts (ankle) was sidelined, leading the Eagles to a win by completing 20 of 25 passes for 242 yards and two scores. In regular-season finale, Minshew once again took the reins from Hurts -- who was resting for the playoffs -- and completed 19 of 33 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while leading Philadelphia past Dallas. Minshew is under contract for the 2022 season, but his name likely will be mentioned in trade talks after the Eagles expressed confidence in Hurts moving forward.
Quez Watkins
Quez Watkins Could be No. 2 receiver next year
Wed, Jan 19, 2022, 11:54 AM
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said Wednesday that Watkins can be one of the better No. 2 receivers in the league, Mike Kaye of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: The 2020 sixth-round pick doesn't have the numbers to back that up at this stage in his career, but he took a huge step forward after a quiet rookie season, showing a knack for big plays and high-difficulty catches. Jalen Reagor, a first-round pick from the same draft, can't say the same, which is part of the reason Sirianni referred to him as the team's No. 3 receiver when talking with reporters Wednesday. Of course, the Eagles could also draft or sign someone to push both Watkins and Reagor down the depth chart, but Sirianni's words seemingly support the notion of Watkins at least being the third guy in 2022. Watkins finished 2021 with a 43-647-1 receiving line on 62 targets, while Reagor managed just 33-299-2 on 57 looks.
Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts Gets vote of confidence from GM
Wed, Jan 19, 2022, 10:34 AM
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said Wednesday that Hurts (ankle) showed enough to keep his job as the starting quarterback entering the 2022 season, Zach Berman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The Eagles have the requisite cap space and draft picks to pursue an upgrade, but Roseman said his plan for the offseason is to build around Hurts, who went 8-7-0 as a starter in 2021 and finished the regular season with 3,144 passing yards, 784 rushing yards, 26 total touchdowns and 11 turnovers. While he placed just 26th among 31 qualified passers in completion rate (61.3 percent), Hurts was above-average at avoiding sacks and turnovers, in addition to leading all signal-callers in rushing yards (784) and rushing touchdowns (10). That's solid work for an age-23 season, especially given that Hurts has been stuck with a different coaching staff four straight years dating back to his college days. He'll now have continuity with head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, as well as his top two targets in wideout DeVonta Smith and tight end Dallas Goedert. Next, Hurts will likely take some time to rest and recover, hoping to avoid offseason surgery on the ankle he initially injured in late November.
Quez Watkins
Quez Watkins Seven targets in postseason loss
Mon, Jan 17, 2022, 2:57 PM
Watkins caught two of seen targets for 35 yards during Sunday's 31-15 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Watkins drew seven targets during the Eagles' Week 18 loss to the Cowboys, and he matched that total during the postseason opener. The 23-year-old saw an inconsistent workload during the 2021 campaign and secured 43 of 62 targets for 647 yards and a touchdown while rushing once for three yards across 17 regular-season appearances. He showed some improvement during his second professional campaign and could enter the 2022 season as Philadelphia's No. 2 option at wide receiver.
Jalen Reagor
Jalen Reagor Minimal work against Buccaneers
Mon, Jan 17, 2022, 2:53 PM
Reagor caught one of three targets for two yards in Sunday's 31-15 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Reagor had at least five targets in four of the first five games of the regular season, but his workload diminished later in the year. He topped five targets just once in the final 12 contests during the regular season and caught just 33 of 57 targets for 299 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 10 times for 32 yards across 17 appearances. The 23-year-old was Philadelphia's first-round pick during the 2020 NFL Draft, but he's failed to carve out much of a role across his first two professional seasons.
Boston Scott
Boston Scott Reaches end zone in wild-card loss
Mon, Jan 17, 2022, 2:37 PM
Scott rushed once for 34 yards and a touchdown while securing his lone target for one yard in Sunday's 31-15 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Scott took on a backup role during Sunday's playoff matchup since Miles Sanders was available, but he still scored one of the Eagles' two touchdowns in the loss. The 26-year-old didn't have much fantasy value when Sanders was on the field, and he totaled 87 carries for 373 yards and seven touchdowns while securing 13 of 16 targets for 83 yards during the regular season. Scott is slated to become a restricted free agent during the offseason but will likely remain in a secondary role if he stays with the Eagles.
Kenneth Gainwell
Kenneth Gainwell Gets involved in postseason loss
Sun, Jan 16, 2022, 4:35 PM
Gainwell rushed the ball one time for six yards in Sunday's 31-15 loss to the Buccaneers in the wild-card round. He added five receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: Gainwell was the most productive running back for Philadelphia on Sunday, thanks in large part to game script. He had only two receptions for three yards in the first half, but he picked up gains of 20 and 16 yards as a receiver in the fourth quarter -- the latter of which went for a touchdown. Besides games when the Eagles' running back depth chart was depleted, Gainwell struggled to receive consistent touches in his rookie season. However, with Jordan Howard hitting unrestricted free agency and Boston Scott a restricted free agent this offseason, Gainwell could step into a bigger role in 2022.
Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts In walking boot after Sunday's loss
Sun, Jan 16, 2022, 4:30 PM
Following Sunday's playoff loss to the Buccaneers, Hurts sported a walking boot that he hinted was related to the ankle injury he sustained in Week 12, Mike Kaye of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Hurts also noted that he hopes he doesn't need surgery, but evidently that possibility could potentially be on the table as the Eagles head into their offseason. Either way, the 2020 second-rounder has plenty of time to heal up before Philadelphia re-takes the field. However it remains to be seen what, if any, QB competition is added in the coming months by the franchise, which holds three first-round draft choices in 2022.
Miles Sanders
Miles Sanders Seven carries in return
Sun, Jan 16, 2022, 4:23 PM
Sanders (hand) recorded seven carries for 16 yards in Sunday's 31-15 wild-card round loss to the Buccaneers. He added three receptions for 12 yards.
Analysis: Sanders accounted for seven of the team's nine rushing attempts by running backs in the game, though Jalen Hurts and game script lowered his overall volume. He was largely constrained by the Buccaneers' stout run defense, though he did tally one rush that went for a double-digit gain. Though Sanders managed his most efficient season on the ground in 2021, he will enter the final year of his rookie contract having failed to top 180 rushing attempts in any of his first three campaigns as a pro.
Dallas Goedert
Dallas Goedert Top receiver against Bucs
Sun, Jan 16, 2022, 4:04 PM
Goedert recorded six catches on 12 targets for 92 yards in Sunday's 31-15 wild-card round loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Goedert was one of the few Eagles who produced consistently throughout the game, and he led the team in most receiving stats. He found holes in the Tampa Bay secondary for several big plays, including catches that went for 28, 17 and 16 yards. The only thing missing from his performance was a trip to the end zone, with Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott instead tallying the team's touchdowns. Heading into 2022, Goedert figures to pair with DeVonta Smith as key members of Philadelphia's passing attack after he produced a career-high 830 receiving yards across 15 games during the 2021 campaign.
