Fully healthy
Mon, Jun 12, 2023, 8:26 PM
Johnson says he's fully recovered from his groin injury, EJ Smith of The Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Johnson has completed his recovery from surgery to repair a torn adductor in his groin that he received earlier in the offseason. The 33-year-old should once again serve as the Eagles' starting right tackle and help protect Jalen Hurts once again this season.
Becoming multifaceted
Wed, May 11, 2022, 12:37 PM
Reddick said Wednesday that he's been working with Eagles assistant coach Jeremiah Washburn as both a defensive end and outside linebacker, Eagles insider John McCullen reports.
Analysis: Reddick was primarily an outside linebacker during his first five seasons in the NFL with Arizona and Carolina, registering 23.5 sacks over the last two seasons. However, it appears the 2017 first-round pick will expand his horizons in Philly after signing a three-year, $45 million contract with the Eagles this offseason. The added dimension to his game should help Reddick get easier matchups during his first season with his new squad.
DeVonta Smith
DeVonta Smith Tops depth chart along with Brown
Fri, May 6, 2022, 1:53 PM
Following the recent NFL Draft, the Eagles' wide receiver depth chart will be topped by newcomer A.J. Brown along with Smith, Zach Berman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Brown, who the Eagles obtained from the Titans on the first night of the draft, is now slated to pair with Smith, who caught 64 of his 104 targets for 916 yards and five TDs in 17 games as a rookie after going 10th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. At 6-foot-1, 226 pounds, Brown adds a physical presence opposite Smith, who's listed at 6-foot, 170 pounds. The duo's fantasy upside hinges largely on how well they click with starting QB Jalen Hurts, but both Brown and Smith should at least see steady volume in 2022, given they clearly head a wideout corps that also rosters Quez Watkins, Zach Pascal, Jalen Reagor and Greg Ward.
Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts Says he healthy at OTAs
Wed, May 4, 2022, 1:37 PM
Hurts (ankle) told reporters Wednesday that he's healthy following offseason surgery, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
Analysis: As expected, Hurts is healthy for the start of OTAs after electing to undergo offseason surgery on his left ankle to address a lingering issue he faced during the stretch run of the 2021 campaign. A healthy Hurts paired with the newly acquired A.J. Brown should be intriguing for both Philadelphia fans and fantasy managers
Faces no restrictions
Wed, May 4, 2022, 12:33 PM
Graham told reporters Wednesday that he feels like the Achilles injury never happened and said there are "no restrictions right now," Eliot Shorr-Parks of Sports Radio 94 WIP Philadelphia reports.
Analysis: Graham was carted off the field in the second quarter of Sunday's Week 2 loss to the 49ers and was diagnosed with a torn Achilles. He's well ahead of rehab and apparently is anticipating being ready for the regular season. Per EJ Smith of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Graham added he's good with whatever role the coaches give him next season, but when asked, he said he expects to remain a starter.
Jalen Reagor
Jalen Reagor Becomes trade candidate
Tue, May 3, 2022, 8:39 PM
Jalen Reagor slipped further down the depth chart and is a candidate to be traded after the acquisition of A.J. Brown, Zach Berman of the Athletic reports.
Analysis: Eagles GM Howie Roseman stated after the trade that the team still plans to have Reagor on the roster. But the 2020 first-round pick is now fifth at best on the depth chart with Quez Watkins and Zach Pascal having surpassed him. Greg Ward has been more productive in recent years and is also still on the team. Reagor himself seemed frustrated by news of the deal and erased all mentions of the club on his social media soon after. It may be best for all parties if the 23-year-old got a fresh start elsewhere.
Quez Watkins
Quez Watkins Bumped to third on depth chart
Mon, May 2, 2022, 11:05 PM
Watkins is now seated at third on the Eagles' depth chart after the acquisition of A.J. Brown, Zach Berman of the Athletic reports.
Analysis: Watkins' volume almost certainly takes a hit, as he had been slated to be the Eagles' no. 2 receiver after DeVonta Smith prior to the Brown trade. It's possible, however, that with defenses now having two legit no. 1 receivers to focus on, the Southern Miss product will be more open to scoop up targets and rack up yards. The most likely scenario is that the 2020 sixth-round pick will find it hard to surpass last year's 43 catches and 647 yards.
Flies to Philly
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 3:32 PM
The Eagles selected Calcaterra in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 198th overall.
Analysis: Calcaterra had an interesting route to the NFL. He nearly ended his career after sustaining concussions at Oklahoma and was out of football in 2020. Calcaterra returned to the gridiron at SMU in 2021 and built on the potential he showed when he was in Norman. He caught 38 of 63 targets for 465 yards and four touchdowns in an explosive SMU passing game. Calcaterra (6-foot-4, 241 pounds) ran a 4.62 in the 40-yard dash at the combine, which projects well for his ability to attack the seam in Philadelphia's offense. He's a worthwhile late-round gamble for the Eagles.
Flying with Philly
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 2:51 PM
The Eagles selected Johnson in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 181st overall.
Analysis: Johnson was a four-year starter at Kansas that served as a Swiss Army Knife in the Jayhawks' defense, as he lined up at every linebacker position and put his hand in the dirt at defensive end. At 6-foot, 230 pounds, he'll stick to linebacker at the NFL level, but he's undersized for that position, as well. Still, Johnson possesses excellent speed -- he was a track star in high school -- and a high motor, so he has a good chance to find a role on special teams, if nothing more.
DeVonta Smith
DeVonta Smith Gets big help in receiving corps
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 3:17 AM
The Eagles hope Smith will be helped by the acquisition of A.J. Brown, Tim McManus of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Smith is a smaller receiver at 6-foot, 170 pounds while Brown is much larger at 6-foot-6 and 340 pounds, and coach Nick Sirianni views the duo as complementary to one another. Brown's addition to the receiver room should at the very least draw defensive focus from the 2021 first-round pick as well as create more opportunity for the whole offense by lengthening drives. Quez Watkins, Zach Pascal, Jalen Reagor and Greg Ward will likely now function mostly as afterthoughts in what was a run-first offense in 2021.
Slide stops in Philly
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 9:33 PM
The Eagles selected Dean (pectoral) in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 83rd overall.
Analysis: Dean's slide became the story of Day 2 of the NFL Draft as the Georgia linebacker was expected to be an early second-round selection at worst. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that teams had medical red flags related to a pectoral injury that prevented him from participating at the combine. If the medicals prove to be a non-issue, this is a strong value pick for Philadelphia. Dean was the quarterback of one of the best college football defenses in recent history. His film showed that he is quick to diagnose plays and has the closing speed to find the ball carrier and finish plays. Dean is on the smaller side for an inside linebacker at 6-foot and 225 pounds, but his football IQ and athleticism will help get him on the field once healthy.
Philly bound
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 7:40 PM
The Eagles selected Jurgens in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 51st overall.
Analysis: Jason Kelce is 34 and on a one-year deal, so Philadelphia needed to map out its succession plan at center in the draft and did so with Jurgens out of Nebraska. Jurgens is not big for an offensive lineman at 6-foot-3 and 303 pounds , but he compensates with impressive athleticism. His 4.92-second 40-yard dash ranked in the 97th percentile among offensive linemen in combine history. He will likely learn behind Kelce this season before taking over in 2023 if Kelce retires.
Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts Gains new passing target
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 3:53 PM
The Eagles bolstered the pass-catching corps that Hurts (ankle) will be working with this coming season by trading for wideout A.J. Brown, Tim McManus of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The 6-foot-1, 226 pound Brown -- who subsequently agreed to a four-year, $100 million contract with the Eagles -- will provide the team with a talented and experienced wideout to pair with 6-foot, 170-pounder DeVonta Smith, who Philadelphia drafted 10th overall last year. Along with that improved 1-2 WR punch, Hurts also has a quality tight end to throw to in Dallas Goedert, with the likes of Quez Watkins, Zach Pascal and Jalen Reagor also in the mix for passing targets. Hurts, who is bouncing back from an offseason procedure on his ankle, thus has a chance to grow as a passer in his third season as a pro; any improvement on that front would bolster the 2020 second-rounder's fantasy prospects, which last season were driven by his production as a rusher (784 yards, 10 TDs).
Rookie option likely to be declined
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 2:42 PM
The Eagles are not expected to exercise Dillard's fifth-year option for 2023, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Dillard struggled during his rookie 2019 campaign and was sidelined for the 2020 season due to a torn biceps before losing the starting left tackle job to Jordan Mailata last year. Dillard did start five games in 2021 and faired admirably, but there just isn't a good fit for the 2019 first-round pick in Philadelphia with Mailata on the left side and All-Pro Lane Johnson at right tackle. According to OverTheCap, the projected cost for exercising Dillard's fifth-year option is $12.6 million.
A.J. Brown
A.J. Brown Part of blockbuster trade to Philly
Thu, Apr 28, 2022, 9:05 PM
Brown was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for the 18th overall pick and a third-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Philadelphia used one of its first-round picks to move up and select nose tackle Jordan Davis. Then, the team used its other to bolster the skill positions in a big way by securing one of the best young wide receivers in the league in Brown. Now in Philadelphia, Brown stands to lead a promising receiving corps that also features DeVonta Smith, giving quarterback Jalen Hurts a dynamic top two at the position. As part of the deal, Brown will ink a four-year, $100 million extension, with $57 million guaranteed, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Flies to Philly
Thu, Apr 28, 2022, 8:43 PM
The Eagles selected Davis in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 13th overall.
Analysis: Philadelphia got in on the trading frenzy in the early teens of this year's draft, using one of their two first-round selections to move up to 13 and nab the defensive tackle out of Georgia. Davis is a mountain of a man at 6-foot-6 and 341 pounds, but he's not merely a space-eater in the middle; he is an elite athlete. At the combine, Davis scored above the 95th percentile among all defensive tackles in the 40-yard dash (4.78) and broad jump (123.0 inches). The question with Davis is whether he can remain effective with an increase in snap count, but his physical ability on a play-to-play basis is beyond question. Davis will get to learn the nuances of NFL defensive line play from Fletcher Cox.
Inks tender
Mon, Apr 25, 2022, 10:17 AM
Herbig is signing his restricted free-agent tender with the Eagles on Monday, Chris Franklin of NJ.com reports.
Analysis: Herbig is set to play out the 2022 campaign under a $2.4 million salary. The depth offensive lineman provides valuable versatility for the Eagles, via his ability to play both guard and center.
J.J. Arcega-Whiteside
J.J. Arcega-Whiteside Shifting to tight end
Thu, Apr 21, 2022, 6:59 PM
Arcega-Whiteside (finger) is moving from wide receiver to tight end this offseason, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: The 2019 second-round pick has struggled to find his footing as a pro, tallying only 16 receptions for 290 yards combined across three seasons. Given the lack of production, Arcega-Whiteside was likely to be on the roster bubble heading into the 2022 campaign. While that could remain the case, Arcega-Whiteside may find a spot on the team as a depth option at tight end, particularly with Tyree Jackson attempting to return from a torn ACL.
Gets NFL opportunity
Fri, Apr 8, 2022, 12:25 PM
Allen signed a contract with the Eagles on Friday, Dave Spadaro of the Eagles' official site reports.
Analysis: Allen hasn't played football since 2016, his third and final season at Oregon. In 2014, his first season with the Ducks, the speedster caught 41 passes for 684 yards and seven touchdowns before suffering a knee injury during the opening kickoff of the Rose Bowl. He was able to return the following season before suffering set another season-ending knee injury, resulting in his desire to pursue his Olympic dream. Allen finished fifth in the 110 meter hurdles at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and fourth at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo -- ending just four-tenths of a second away from medaling. After his Olympic efforts, the 27-year-old wanted one more opportunity to try his hand at reaching the NFL, so he participated in Oregon's Pro Day and ran a 4.35 40-yard dash, which quickly drew the attention of Philadelphia's brass. Allen figures to be a long shot to make the Eagles' initial 53-man roster, but his speed certainly makes him an interesting prospect to watch during the offseason.
Linking up with Eagles
Sat, Mar 26, 2022, 11:22 AM
White will sign with the Eagles on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Coming off of his best statistical season to date, White was unable to find a big market for his services this offseason. He ultimately has settled on a one-year deal with the Eagles, likely in hopes of finding a longer-term contract that will net him a larger payday next offseason. He should settle in as an off-ball linebacker, most likely working alongside T.J. Edwards.
